Textual Analysis 1 - Cindi Lauper

As a first example for a music video I have decided to analyse Cindi Lauper’s video for time after time. I have chosen this one because I wanted a comparison between my two analyses so you are able to notice the development of the media from an older song and video to a recent one.

Introduction of the video.

At the start you see a mid-shot of a small lit up trailer in the dark woods and using diegetic sounds of an owl to show that it is late at night. The audio is not yet playing however you hear sounds slowly fade in. The shot of the trailer is then zoomed in slowly and voices of characters on an old romantic movie on television are talking.

The scene changes to a close up of Cindi Lauper as the watches the movie from inside the trailer mouthing the words along with the movie and hugging a small toy animal. The fact that she is doing this at the beginning of the video can indicate to the audience she is deeply in love or a very passionate person, we also get more of an idea of what she is going to be signing about. You see a clip of the old styled film and then a more zoomed out shot her quoting lined from the film, this time because the camera shows us more of the frame you are now able to see someone lying next to her sleeping as the stays awake. They then show an ending to the film and the actors on the television say ‘good bye’, Cindi then looks sad and turns of the television. She turns to look at the sleeping man and this is when the song starts to play.

She kissed the man on the cheek and then starts to lip sync to the music and lays down. Her lyrics start to indicate that she missis the good time she had with the love of her life, as she says the words ‘flash back’ the scenes fades from inside the trailer to a ‘memory’, there are several of these memory clips that show us see the developing relationship with her and this man she had met. Another clip shows them previously arguing at a diner and she runs out filming this in a panning shot and he starts to chase her to apologise, however she hides and the chorus to the song comes in to make it more dramatic. As she is hiding they use slight special effects to show her imagining an old woman who supported her when she was younger, to do this they make the woman slighting transparent and here is when we see an older clip her when she is little talking to her mum.

It comes back to the same shot of the trailer but in the morning and in the daylight, a similar close up is shown of her again looking at the man in out of the flashback and then she heads out of the trailer, this has been filmed as a mid-shot an she slams the trailer door with her foot and we see an extreme close up of the door slamming. She takes the belonging and the man starts to wake up. Now we don’t see her lip syncing with the video but however we just her the music play over the footage.

What I have noticed so far is the scenes from the video relate back to the ones she had watched on the movie at the beginning.

The man wakes up and chases after her as he watched her leave using an over the shoulder shot from behind.
